Busted by Metadata: EXIF Data in Forum Photos Helps Authorities Catch N.J. Fentanyl Trafficker

A New Jersey resident who operated a drug distribution network from his basement received a substantial prison sentence after his operation resulted in a customer's death.

The Operation

Mark T. Eager ran a drug distribution network from a basement room in his girlfriend's parents' home in Kearny, New Jersey, a town about 10 miles west of Manhattan. Operating under the vendor name "WRSEH10," he advertised free samples of what he called "China White Synthetic Heroin" on Dread, a darknet forum, offering "$0 Cost + $0 Shipping" to build his customer base.

Eager took orders, packaged fentanyl pills and powder, and mailed shipments across the United States to hundreds of customers over four months. He accepted Bitcoin as payment and generated approximately $42,000 in cryptocurrency sales. In total, he distributed just over one pound of fentanyl.

Death and Initial Investigation

In November 2023, a Michigan resident who had signed up for Eager's free sample died of an overdose hours after receiving his shipment. The man died from a combination of fentanyl, methamphetamine, and fluorofentanyl, a fentanyl variant, according to court records.

The investigation began when someone on the Dread forum posted a warning:

"do not buy this garbage, fent bullshit. Buddy OD off the free sample. DONT DO IT"

Eager responded by apologizing and claiming his product was "extremely strong & to be respected completely." He said he intended to service "high tolerance users mostly" and included harm-reduction warnings in his shipments.

"We are sorry that you & your buddy missed all of the warnings. We hope he is okay & making a full recovery."

Federal agents discovered the online warning and began investigating. Portland police and agents from Homeland Security Investigations in Oregon, who were already tracking darknet fentanyl trafficking, identified the deceased Michigan customer and started building a case against Eager.

Critical Finding: Possible EXIF Data Lead

During our own investigation, we discovered photographs that Eager posted on his Dread forum thread to advertise his samples. After locating these images, we conducted forensic analysis by extracting metadata embedded within them. Our digging uncovered GPS location information that revealed a potential investigative avenue.

One photograph, taken on October 20, 2023, with an iPhone XR, contained precise GPS coordinates:

Data Point Value
GPS Latitude 40° 46' 25.10" N
GPS Longitude 74° 8' 30.89" W
Camera Model iPhone XR
Software Version 16.6.1
Timestamp 2023:10:20 00:27:04
Altitude 38.8 m Above Sea Level

These coordinates point to Kearny, New Jersey, the exact location where Eager was operating his drug business. Based on our findings, we believe this EXIF data may have been how law enforcement pinpointed his address, though federal authorities have not publicly confirmed this investigative method.

The seemingly anonymous darknet vendor had inadvertently left a digital trail through his own marketing materials.

Tracking the Vendor

Federal agents employed multiple investigative techniques:

  • Made undercover purchases from "WRSEH10" using Bitcoin
  • Worked to unmask the vendor's true identity
  • Seized an envelope postmarked from New Jersey sent to the deceased Michigan customer
  • Conducted investigative work that led them to Kearny, New Jersey

In June 2024, federal prosecutors from Oregon and New Jersey obtained a search warrant. Agents found Eager living in a basement room where he operated his drug business. They seized:

  • 361 grams of powdered fentanyl
  • Counterfeit M30 fentanyl pills
  • Computers and packaging materials

The Girlfriend's Role

Eager's girlfriend, Maude A. Melton, 33, was later arrested on federal drug distribution charges, which remain pending. She told authorities that she helped Eager operate the vendor site "like a business," assisting with packaging and mailing the drugs.

Sentencing Arguments

Prosecution's Position

Assistant U.S. Attorney Scott Kerin argued for a lengthy sentence, stressing that Eager was aware of fentanyl's dangers but continued selling it anyway.

"From his little basement room in New Jersey, he was able to sell it to anyone, anywhere. Despite knowing of the dangers of fentanyl, he kept selling it."

Authorities could not prove that Eager's fentanyl directly caused the Michigan man's death, only that it was a contributing factor.

Defense's Position

Assistant Federal Public Defender Michael Benson pushed for a much shorter sentence of five years and three months. Benson argued that Eager was driven by his own drug addiction rather than greed. He said Eager bought fentanyl from street-level dealers and resold it online, viewing it as "a favor" for other users.

"He's been buying drugs on street corners his whole life. It was the only marketable skill he had at that point."

Benson also challenged enhancing Eager's sentence for misrepresenting his product, contending that most darknet buyers know "China White" is slang for fentanyl. U.S. District Judge Michael H. Simon rejected that argument.

Sentencing and Remorse

At sentencing, Eager said he had no excuse for his actions and expressed deep shame. Key points from his statement:

  • Lost his best friend to a fatal drug overdose
  • Lost an ex-girlfriend to a fatal drug overdose
  • Apologized to the family of the Michigan man who died
  • Mother died in March while he was in federal custody
  • Committed to drug recovery and rehabilitation

"I acknowledge I had no right to put the American people at risk with my actions. I apologize for bringing shame to my family and my family name."

He said he is in the early stages of drug recovery and committed to starting anew after prison.

"I finally have recognized that drugs have done very little positive in my life."

Judge's Decision

U.S. District Judge Michael H. Simon acknowledged that Eager appeared remorseful and committed to change but determined a substantial prison sentence was necessary.

Aspect Details
Sentence Imposed 11 years and 3 months in federal prison
Guideline Range Started at 17 years
Sentence Status Significantly below guideline range

"This is a very serious problem in our country, and the sentencing needs to reflect that."

Key Takeaway

Note: Our investigation revealed how digital forensics and EXIF data analysis can expose even careful attempts at anonymity on the darknet. A single photograph posted for marketing purposes contained embedded GPS coordinates pointing directly to Eager's location. While law enforcement has not publicly disclosed their exact methods, this finding suggests EXIF data extraction may have been a critical tool in bringing this darknet trafficker to justice.
