3-Year Prison Sentence Sought for Key Figure in Dark Web Market Bohemia
The Dutch Public Prosecution Office (OM) has demanded a 3-year prison sentence and the forfeiture of 31 bitcoins from a 21-year-old Englishman. The suspect is considered a key player in the world's largest dark web market, Bohemia/Cannabia, where international drug sales generated significant profits.
Investigation and Charges
The dark web platform, Bohemia/Cannabia, allowed anonymous trading of hard drugs, soft drugs, medications, and DDoS attacks. The market had global sellers and customers, with the Netherlands ranking seventh among the largest exporters. At the beginning of this year, 20,000 orders were linked to the Netherlands.
The investigation into Bohemia in the Netherlands started in August 2022, after it was discovered that the platform was partially hosted on Dutch servers in Dronten. Shortly after, law enforcement identified the British suspect and arrested him on June 27, 2024, at Schiphol Airport. Searches of his laptop and phones yielded crucial evidence of his role in Bohemia, as well as 31 bitcoins (valued at €1.7 million at the time).
Suspect's Role and Activities
The investigation revealed that the technically skilled suspect, who was still a minor at the time, began writing scripts for the criminal organization behind Bohemia in 2019. He quickly gained a more prominent role in setting up, managing, and securing the online drug market.
The suspect used "bulletproof servers" to create a hidden service on the TOR network, called Bohemia, which allowed users to trade in illegal goods anonymously. He claimed to have become a "partner" in 2023, but problems arose when other administrators failed to perform, and money went missing. The suspect worked alone on Bohemia, alongside his schoolwork, until the market eventually shut down.
Additional Charges and Evidence
The OM stated that the suspect's participation in the organization behind Bohemia was not an isolated incident. He had worked tirelessly on the market for over 2.5 years, earning significant amounts of money.
Further investigation revealed that the suspect discussed with his brother how to legitimize and spend his $1.8 million fortune. He was also setting up an online casino, renting luxurious accommodations, and traveling by private jet.
Child Pornography Charges
In a disturbing twist, the police discovered child pornographic material on the suspect's Telegram account. It is alleged that he had paid for this material using bitcoin. This has led to additional charges, with the suspect now facing prosecution for possession of child pornographic material. The investigation revealed that the suspect had been accessing and paying for this illicit material between September 2023 and February 2024, further highlighting the suspect's involvement in serious and disturbing criminal activities.
Upcoming Court Decision
The court is set to deliver its verdict in two weeks.
