A nine-month investigation by the National Organised Crime Group, known as Operation Solana, has led to the exposure of a dark web operation involved in importing and distributing drugs in New Zealand. The investigation, which began after a local group was found using anonymous online marketplaces to carry out illegal activities, resulted in the arrest of 11 people and the seizure of significant amounts of cash and drugs.
How the Operation Worked
According to Detective Senior Sergeant Jason Hunt, the group used:
- Dark web markets
- Encrypted messaging applications
- Cryptocurrency services
to obscure their identities and financial flows. The drugs were being sent to New Zealand from the United Kingdom, Europe, and the USA.
Search Warrants and Arrests
On Thursday and Friday, 16 search warrants were carried out across Auckland and Hamilton, resulting in the arrest of 11 people, aged between 24 and 42. The arrested individuals are expected to appear in the Auckland District Court and Hamilton District Court, facing charges of:
- Importing, possessing, and supplying class A, B, and C drugs
- Unlawful possession of firearms
- Participating in an organised criminal group
Drugs and Cash Seized
- Over 200 kilograms of controlled drugs, including methamphetamine, cocaine, MDMA, and ketamine, were seized at borders in the USA, Australia, and Europe, destined for the group.
- Approximately $500,000 in cash was seized during search warrants in Auckland and Hamilton.
- A 3D-printed firearm was also seized during the search warrants.
