Trio Jailed for Dark Web Crypto Drug Sales
Three men have been sentenced to prison for selling Class A drugs using the dark web and cryptocurrency.
The Case
Three men, Malcolm Magala, Alain Kirunda-Nsiiro, and Jerome Omard, have been jailed for their involvement in a conspiracy to sell Class A drugs, including heroin and crack cocaine, using the dark web and cryptocurrency.
The Investigation
The South East Regional Organised Crime Unit (Serocu) investigated the trio and tracked their activities using cryptocurrency payments and customer parcels. In July 2022, Serocu investigators intercepted Omard as he was on his way to post packages of drugs to customers at a Post Office in Walthamstow.
Key Evidence
- 138g of heroin was found hidden inside a music speaker at Omard's property.
- Magala was found in possession of £3,150 of cryptocurrency and cryptocurrency hardware.
- A small pill press and small quantities of pills were discovered at Magala's home.
Sentencing
The trio was sentenced to prison for their roles in the conspiracy:
- Malcolm Magala, 37, was sentenced to 11 years and three months' imprisonment.
- Jerome Omard, 44, was sentenced to four years and six months' imprisonment.
- Alain Kirunda-Nsiiro, 39, was sentenced to 12 years' imprisonment.
The Impact
Detective Inspector Rob Bryant said the conspiracy was a "complex operation" to sell and distribute drugs. He added:
"I hope that this shows criminals that their activities on the dark web are detectable and that we can and do monitor their behaviour before carrying out arrests and bringing them before the courts."
The Use of Cryptocurrency
The case highlights the use of cryptocurrency in facilitating illicit activities on the dark web. The investigation demonstrates that law enforcement agencies can track cryptocurrency payments and identify individuals involved in such activities.
Conclusion
The sentencing of the trio marks a significant success for law enforcement agencies in disrupting the sale of Class A drugs using the dark web and cryptocurrency. The case serves as a warning to individuals involved in such activities that their actions can be detected and prosecuted.
