Firebunny Dark Web Crypto Drug Operation: Mastermind Sentenced to Prison
A Complex Web of Illicit Activity
Nan Wu, the 39-year-old mastermind behind one of the largest-ever dark web drug-trafficking operations, has been sentenced to six-and-a-half years in prison. Wu, a Queens native, was the ringleader of a group that shipped out more than 10,000 packages of cocaine, MDMA, Ketamine, and other drugs to customers in all 50 US states.
The Operation
The operation, dubbed "FireBunnyUSA," was run by Wu and four accomplices - Peng Peng Tang, Bowen Chen, Zixiang Lin, and Katie Montgomery - between January 2019 and August 2022. The group laundered more than $7.9 million through multiple dark web vendors, with Wu raking in $7.2 million through cryptocurrency exchanges.
The Crypto Trail
The ring converted funds into Monero (XMR), a privacy-focused crypto designed to be untraceable, before converting it back to Bitcoin and moving it through exchange accounts controlled by Wu, Tang, and others. Investigators found close to $900,000 worth of crypto on Tang's phone alone.
The Charges
Wu pleaded guilty to the criminal sale of a controlled substance and money laundering charges in April. As part of a plea agreement, Wu agreed to hand over 20 bitcoin, 3297 Monero, and $12,857 in cash that was recovered during the investigation.
The Investigation
Manhattan investigators conducted 11 undercover purchases from the vendor between June 2021 and August 2022, including cocaine, MDMA, and Ketamine shipped directly into Manhattan. After Wu's June 2022 arrest, law enforcement found one kilogram of Ketamine, more than 1,200 MDMA pills, one half kilogram of MDMA in rock form, and other drugs and shipping supplies.
Global Crackdowns
The case is part of a larger effort to crack down on dark web crime. Recent global crackdowns include:
- The seizure of 145 BidenCash domains tied to $17 million in stolen card trades in the U.S.
- Operation RapTor's coordinated raids across 10 countries seizing $200 million in crypto and arresting 270 people
- India busting "Edison," an alleged darknet vendor accused of moving 10,000 LSD blots a month through Monero
The Role of Crypto
Crypto is only useful if you can buy and sell goods and services or cash out into fiat, and that is much more difficult with privacy coins, especially as many mainstream exchanges have offboarded the use of privacy coins, such as Monero. According to Andrew Fierman, Head of National Security Intelligence at Chainalysis, "the vast majority of criminal activity still uses mainstream cryptos, such as Bitcoin, Ethereum and stablecoins."
Conclusion
The sentencing of Nan Wu marks a significant victory in the fight against dark web crime. The case highlights the importance of tracing and prosecuting illicit activity through the crypto trail, even years after the fact. As the use of crypto continues to evolve, it's essential that law enforcement agencies and regulatory bodies stay vigilant in their efforts to prevent and disrupt illicit activity.
Sentence and Additional Charges
Wu was sentenced to six-and-a-half years in prison on Thursday in Manhattan Supreme Court. He is still awaiting sentencing in a federal case, with federal prosecutors recommending a sentence between 6 to 8 years behind bars. His attorney, Barry Zone, said he expects both sentences to run at the same time. The four other defendants have also pleaded guilty and are awaiting sentencing.
Manhattan District Attorney's Statement
"The dismantling of this illegal drug trafficking operation highlights the ability of my office's prosecutors and analysts to trace cryptocurrency and unmask those committing crimes on the dark web," Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg said in a statement. "Whether on the dark web or on our city's streets, we will root out criminal organizations who put our community's health at risk."
